Title: Trends in the Application of Solar Energy for Wastewater Treatment

Abstract:

Biotic and abiotic processes determine the fate of organic pollutants in the aquatic environment. For each pollutant, abiotic processes in surface waters include hydrolysis and photolysis. Most organic pollutants show stability to hydrolysis, so direct and indirect photolysis are the main pathways for their abiotic transformation. Presently, most solar water treatment processes are still undeveloped, with limited applications. The efficiency of direct photolysis is usually improved by strong oxidant H2O2, which yields •OH-radicals. In that case, we are talking about indirect photolysis, one of the efficient advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). Different AOPs decompose organic pollutants with radiation and with or without catalysts. AOPs are particularly important for treating wastewater containing highly toxic organic compounds for which biological treatment processes are not applicable. Degradation of organic compounds using AOPs usually leads to complete mineralization of pollutants, unlike methods that only convert them into other forms. The commercialization of some processes depends on their sustainability and economic viability. The application of solar energy for water treatment, in combination with AOPs, is one of the sustainable solutions for challenges related to water pollution.
