Title: Development of protective solutions to prevent high voltage insulator damage in polluted and contaminated industrial zone.

Abstract:

Modern era is totally dependent on electric power and demand is increasing at tremendous rate due to urbanization and industrial growth.Electrical power systems need to be reliable for uninterrupted supply which means to enhance power quality. Failure of insulator is one of the key reasons for interruption of supply. Sometimes substations or transmission lines are located in the vicinity of industrial region where  harmful pollutants exist. Depending upon geographical location and areas, variety of pollutants differs just like chloride salts in coastal areas whereas in the vicinity of cement industry or coal plant, CaO are more dominant.  Hydrogen sulphide and Sulphuric Acid is developed with drain containing sewerage water. The deposition of pollutants cover the surface of outdoor insulators and creates a hydrophilic path, when exposed to moisture which leads to flashover. It also increases the risk of rusting, corrosion, and deterioration of the materials. Accelerating factors include temperature, and synergistic effects of chemical combinations. Some of NTDC substations have been reported to be in industrial zones and facing problems of polluted contaminants. WAPDA Town Lahore, Ravi grid Station are a few examples
